"French accident"

When we dropped off Ruby at school today, one of the staff from the school waved to us. Ruby told us that she was a helper in the cafeteria. "She is from France, and sometimes we don't understand what she is saying".

What that lit your question fire. Why does she talk that way?  Why is she from France?  Why did she move here?   What does she talk like?

I explained patiently that she was talking with a French accent because people from France speak French and when they move here, they learn English but their mouth still talks with a hint of French. That is the accent.

You had many more questions about accents. Then, right before I let you out to go to preschool, you looked back and said "momma, when I get big, I am gonna have a French accident too".

The teacher holding your hand looked perplexed and I just smiled and said "she means French accent". :). We both laughed and you smiled.
